The graphic art and sculptures of Kollwitz have been described as the ‘soul of German Expressionism’, and it is particularly the etchings, lithographs, woodcuts, and drawings which form the reflections in this book. There is no need for words to describe the art of Kӓthe Kollwitz though this collection aims to do just that.
Reflecting on Kӓthe Kollwitz could be called ekphrasis – a genre which refers to speaking out on art, so this collection from Adéle Ogiếr Jones is part of her response. Poems were composed during or after viewing exhibitions of Kollwitz: Modern Times in the Museum für Neue Kunst Freiburg, and Seeing Kollwitz anew in the Käthe Kollwitz Museum Köln. In 1942, Kӓthe Kollwitz produced the lithograph Seed for planting must not be ground. It has been adapted for the cover of this book, and with it, the following poem

ground anemones
remind me of her repeated words
seed for sowing should not be ground

seed for sowing should
not be milled, so she painted
boys again and more

her legacy
boys should not be sent to war
seed not for the ground

no sentimental
yearning, but command,
demanding never again war

let them be boys
like young horses
greedily scenting the air
never again war.
